Several attendees voiced concerns regarding the consequences of excessive governmental regulation on area businesses. Moore noted that “there is deepening concern about government intervention in the private sector and about government spending.” Ginny Knapp, having recently returned from China and noting the considerably lighter regulation in other countries that enables them to do business faster and at a much lower cost than in the U.S., quipped that “China is going to be eating our kids’ lunches.” Janes agreed, stating that “there is very little regulation in China. There’s an incredible cost in the U.S. for our degree of regulation.” Robert Goldenberg agreed that less regulation appears to be the key to China’s success, but said he struggles with “the fact that China is not upholding the same ethical standards that we are in the U.S. in terms of how we treat our workers and deal with environmental issues.” Continue reading...
