Oxygen is one of the indispensable components for our metabolism. This now appears not to be true. This year, a group of Italian and Danish researchers discovered an anaerobic, multi-cellular complex life form in what Science News describes as "a briny sulfurous hellhole" off the south coast of Greece. What hardy creatures could possibly subsist in a place so inhospitable and little explored that finding them has been likened to "going to the moon to collect rocks"? Meet loricifera.
